Cameras and Lenses

People often ask me what kind of gear I use. The answer is very dependent on the activity and intentions (something I hope to write about in much more detail eventually). The easiest way to summarize my kits is as follows:

1. Compact and portable film. Since 2015 I have been using two compact film cameras - the Fuji GF670 and an Olympus XA. I enjoy this setup for travel because the image quality is outstanding and the lack of screens gives me no opportunity to check my work. I take a picture and move on. Notably, both have fixed lenses which forces you to adopt a certain perspective. As a bonus, it is nice to not worry about which lenses to carry as I often do with my backpacking setup.

2. Small and tough digital for harsh backpacking environments. In the past, I used a weatherproof Nikon D610 DSLR with 28 and 14mm lenses, but I now exclusively use a Fuji X100. I have been toying with the Nikonos waterproof film camera for backcountry film shooting.

3. Lots of character. 4x5 film setup with some oddball lenses like a hacksaw-ed projector lens. The Graflex camera has a focal plane shutter which allows me to use any lens with suficienct coverage (not only lenses with built-in shutters). I have cheap, regular 4x5 wide angle and telephoto lenses that don't get much use.
